Actor Wendell Pierce was arrested in Atlanta on Saturday on a charge of battery.
Atlanta Police Department spokesman Donald Hannah said in a statement that Wendell was arrested early on Saturday morning at the Loews Atlanta Hotel where he was a guest.
New Orleans native Wendell is known for his television roles as Detective William "Bunk" Moreland on The Wire and Antoine Batiste on Treme.
Police said the incident was not significant and was treated as "any other arrest" and that Wendell never indicated he was well-known.
Fulton County Jail records show he was arrested on a charge of simple battery and released the same day on $1,000 (£700) bond.
TMZ, which obtained images of the arrest, is reporting that the incident occurred during an argument about Democrat presidential candidate Bernie Sanders as Wendell is an outspoken supporter of Hillary Clinton.
The police spokesman said they will share the incident report once it has been completed.
