Shia LaBeouf has confirmed that he is to play tennis champion John McEnroe on the big screen.
The actor will star as the Wimbledon winner in Borg/McEnroe, which will chart the rivalry between McEnroe and Swedish star Bjorn Borg during the '70s and '80s.
Shia, who has been at the centre of his own share of controversies, clearly feels a kinship with McEnroe, who he said "is me".
The former Transformers actor also revealed that his backhand was "getting there".
The Hollywood Reporter said that Swedish actor Sverrir Gudnason will play Borg, while Stellan Skarsgard will star as Borg's coach.
Shia, 29, was speaking at the Cannes Film festival, where his new film American Honey is competing for the Palme d'Or.
He stars alongside newcomer Sasha Lane as a leader of teenage drifters and his performance is earning rave reviews.
