Twitter wanted to like Upstart Crow, but the canned laughter really grated

Ben Elton's new comedy series Upstart Crow had been billed as the new Blackadder and while Twitter was willing to give it a go there was one major problem - the canned laughter.

David Mitchell starred as a young William Shakespeare at the start of his career but before the storyline could develop beyond that a lot of Twitter users were already switching off.

Others just didn't like it.

For those who didn't flip over they were rewarded with a storyline that saw Mitchell's Shakespeare blunder his way whimsically through a Romeo and Juliet plot.

There was a sense of Rowan Atkinson's Blackadder character along the way and, while not everyone was convinced, there was enough to suggest the show will get better.

Other just went back to an old favourite.
