2009 NME Awards

Friendly Fires; Glasvegas; White Lies; Florence and the MachineA month's worth of pre-awards tours and weeks of online and offline voting culminated in the spectacular finale that was the Shock Waves NME Awards 2009. Tears of joy and regret were shed and many a hopeful musician's dreams came true or were brutally shattered last night at the Brixton Academy.

For those of you who didn't get tickets or missed it on the telly, here's a brief rundown of the night's shining stars and damp squibs. Oasis were one of the top performers as they won the coveted award for Best Brit Band and also the prize for best blog went to Noel Gallagher. Check out Oasis' latest album Dig Out Your Soul and search for 'Shock Of The Lightning' which was nominated for best video.

Alex Turner who received 6 nominations for Artic Monkeys, The Last Shadow Puppets and individually, secured the Best DVD for 'Artic Monkeys At The Apollo' and also Best Video with The Last Shadow Puppets 'My Mistakes Were Made For You'. It's no wonder Alex Turner was so popular at this year's NME awards since the Arctic Monkeys have consistently been one of the most downloaded artists in the MP3 charts. He missed out on the Best Dressed award, however, being beaten by his girlfriend Alexa Chung.

There's a good chance that veteran act Blur take up some megabytes on your iPod since they've been around so many years and last night they reformed to play 'This Is A Low' - the first time they've played together since 2000. If you not familiar with Blur, why not check out some MP3s and download their latest songs?

The Best International Band award went to The Killers. The nominations for Best Solo Artist were a mixed bag this year with Pete Doherty coming out on top. Best New Band and Best Track were awarded to MGMT. Do you have the latest MGMT singles in your iTunes or Winamp library? Search for them and download them now!

The big losers of the night were also winners in their own booby prize categories of Villain of the Year - George W Bush, Worst Dressed - Amy Winehouse, Worst Album and Worst Band - Jonas Brothers. Strangely enough these winners were not present to receive their awards. Check out photos of Amy Winehouse looking her worst!

Don't miss the NME Big Gig aftershow party tonight at the O2 arena featuring The Cribs, Klaxons, Bloc Party, Kaiser Chiefs and the Manic Street Preachers.
