Crashes in motor sport are nothing new – but huge pile-ups which take out a number of the field are a less common sight. However, this is what happened in the 2014 24 Hours of Spa race, on Saturday.
This dramatic accident – which involved more than half a dozen cars including one which burst into flames – is the fourth in a series of crashes which occurred at the latest Spa-Francorchamps race.
Another serious smash involved two Ferraris; one of the drivers, Marcus Mahy, had to be airlifted to hospital by helicopter. He is believed to be conscious but in a very serious condition, reports Motorsport.com.
This Belgian race was won by a team of Vanthoor, Winkelbock and Rast who managed to cover 527 laps in their Audi R8 – finishing just ahead of a BMW Z4 on 527 laps and another R8 on 526 laps.
