The fruit of the odd partnership between Range Rover and Victoria Beckham has finally arrived, with an Evoque bearing the design handiwork of the mardy faced ex Spice Girl unveiled at the CAFA Art Museum in Beijing.
You may remember that when Land Rover unveiled the Evoque, it also invited Victoria Beckham along and, quite vaguely, announced that she'd had (or was going to have) something to do with the interior design.
It was a calculated risk on Land Rover's behalf. The company knew that a swell of the male dominated motoring press would disparage the move (and did)...but it also knew that, ultimately, it wouldn't matter. Like it or not, the Evoque is designed for exactly the sort of customer that Victoria Beckham is arguably the ultimate embodiment of.
But it's unfair to dismiss Mrs Beckham as nothing more than a rent-a-pout for product endorsement - her ability as a fashion designer is beginning to transcend her fame; she won Designer of the Year at last year's British Fashion Awards.
Having said that, the garnish that Mrs Beckham has added to this Evoque is, somehow, £40,000 worth of tarting up.
Every Beckham Evoque is a three-door and powered by the 237bhp 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine, linked to a six-speed auto.
They're each matte black with a gloss black roof and matching 20-inch alloys. There's rose gold detailing on the wheels and grille, as well as on the gear selector and some of the switches in the interior.
The seats are tan leather with contrasting stitching inspired by a baseball, apparently, and the rear bench is replaced by two individual chairs. The dashboard gets the extended leather treatment, as do the glove box, door cards and arm rests.
Each car comes with a set of luggage that matches the suede roof lining, as well as a hand-stitched leather wallet for the documents, signed by Beckham.
"I wanted to design a car that I wanted to drive and that David wanted to drive too. Something that was on brand for Range Rover and on brand for me, too. I brought a naivety to this project, and you can really tell that I designed it," said Beckham.
We're not sure who this David character is that she refers to.
Land Rover hasn't said how many Beckham Evoques will come to the UK, but the first cars will go to China. The company hasn't ruled out further Beckham-branded special editions in future.
