Koenigsegg has updated the world record breaking Agera R hypercar for the 2013 model year, and with it boosted the top speed to a whopping (claimed) 273mph - which the company now says it will verify soon.
If it can, the Agera R will officially become the world's fastest production car - faster, even, than the 267mph Bugatti Veyron Super Sport. (See video below for details on that.)
The new Agera R has an astonishing 1,140bhp when run using E85 biofuel, although, shamefully, the engine can only muster up 960bhp using regular unleaded. Sheesh.
Although its top speed hasn't been verified yet, Koenigsegg has a good record on backing up its claims - the company has previously, albeit briefly, held the 'world's fastest production car' record.
Those horsepower figures are raised slightly from the previous car, which developed 940bhp on unleaded and 1,115bhp on biofuel. The increase comes by way of an engine management system re-map and slight raising of the rev limit, to 7,500rpm.
The engine is a twin-turbo 5.0-litre V8, whose block is fashioned from aluminium and with parts made from other expensive, lightweight materials including titanium and carbon fibre. It's mid-rear mounted and drives the rear wheels through a seven-speed twin clutch automatic gearbox.
The chassis is made from a carbon fibre and aluminium honeycomb, while loads of the former material is used to fashion the body. The electronically height adjustable suspension (so there's no fear of speed humps) is of the pushrod type, inspired by the setup used in F1 cars.
It hits 62mph in 2.9 seconds, the same as a Lamborghini Aventador does, although at that speed the Agera R is just getting going: 0-124 happens in just 7.5 seconds, and it'll pass 186mph in 14.5 seconds. By that time, a 1.0-litre Vauxhall Corsa is just about straining towards 50mph.
In many ways the Agera R's facelift is much like any other - the car has been mildly redesigned, including new carbon trim bits on the bumper and bonnet, new side winglets, an uprated exhaust outlet and redesigned wheels.
However, the last of those changes makes a big difference, says Koenigsegg, because they're "the world's lightest and strongest hypercar wheels." They're made entirely of carbon, and the spokes are hollow. If you're interested in the rationale behind this, here's what Koenigsegg has to say:
"Everyone understands that unsprung weight should be keept at a minimum in order to have maximum performance. What is not so well understood is that the rotational mass should be kept to a minimum.
"Every time the car accelerates or brakes this rotational mass works against the objective of quick acceleration or short braking distance.
"In addition, the steering feel and keenness is affected by the rotational mass, as the rotational mass acts as a gyro, counteracting turning. Simply put, reducing the rotational mass not only gives less unsprung weight and a lighter car, but it also increases the dynamic power that goes into the ground while accelerating or braking."
