First pictures and details released for insane Mercedes-AMG G 63

It's not been long since Mercedes-Benz unveiled the new generation of its G-Class SUV in full, showing off the vehicle's newly luxurious interior but promising similar levels of off-road ability. Now, though, the brand has announced a successor to the previous G's most ridiculous incarnation - the brutish AMG G 63.

The new G 63 keeps the regular G-Class' boxy bodywork and unashamedly off-road based styling but upgrades the underpinnings rather significantly. Under the bonnet lies the latest version of AMG's 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 petrol engine. In the G 63 it develops 576bhp and 850Nm of torque.

Those incredible figures are enough to take the not-exactly-aerodynamic G-Class from 0-60 in around 4.3 seconds, and on to a limited top speed of 137mph.

The engine is mated to a nine-speed automatic gearbox and - unsurprisingly - 4MATIC four-wheel-drive, ensuring the G 63 is almost as capable off-road as its lesser-powered brethren. Three differential locks and a low-range gear ratio add to this prowess.

The engine even makes some concessions to economy, with cylinder deactivation tech promising fuel economy of 21.4mpg and CO2 emissions of 299g/km.

Of course, the AMG model gains some serious exterior chintz to remind passers-by that this is no lowly diesel. To that end, it's fitted with an AMG-specific radiator grille, flared wheel arches, wheels in sizes up to 22-inches and, best of all, side-exit exhaust pipes.

The new G 63 will debut at the Geneva Motor Show, before arriving in UK showrooms later in the year. Mercedes has not announced details of pricing, but expect a starting figure approaching £150,000.
