Baton Rouge resident Caesar Ray heard his daughter's car alarm go off early Wednesday morning, 6 December, at about the same time a neighbour phoned to tell him she'd seen someone lurking around the house.

Ray, who has law enforcement training and previously worked for the Department of Corrections, grabbed his gun and stepped outside to face Roberto Garcia in the front yard.

He ordered Garcia face down, handcuffed him, and stood guard until police arrived, and the entire incident was streamed live on Facebook.

Local media reported that Garcia was charged with auto burglary and attempted burglary of an inhabited dwelling.

Ray warned that others should not do what he did without training but said that people should "be vigilant" and observant, "especially when you are coming home."
