Only Fools and Horses Reliant van sells for £41,000 at auction

A Reliant Regal van that starred in the BBC comedy Only Fools and Horses sold for over £41,000 at an auction yesterday.

The 1968 Reliant Regal three-wheeler was used in the trailer for the show's series in 2002, and was driven by both Rodney and Del Boy. It was also used in another episode that was filmed in Monaco.

The car was bought at a 2008 Bonhams auction and has since had a reconditioned engine, as well as a remote-control start fitted. It also has a smoke machine fitted that is operated from a dashboard switch as well as the recognisable 'Tiger Skin' print interior.

The car was sold to a bidder in the room by Silverstone Auctions at the NEC Classic Motor Show yesterday.

We caught up with the proud new owner, Christopher Boyden of waste disposal Tardis Environmental UK, just after the lot sold.

He told us: "We aim to use the car to promote our business and increase the amount of attention we get. Everyone recognises it and it will be a fantastic promotional tool for the company.

"I'm absolutely over the moon as I've had my eye on it for a while as I'm a big fan of Only Fools and Horses, as well as thousands of other people."

Other star lots at the weekend-long sale included a Ferrari 458 Italia owned by both Sir Chris Hoy OBE and Chris Evans that sold for £137,250, and a 2011 Ford Focus RS with just 18 miles from new that sold for £43,875.

Henry Whale, operations manager at Silverstone Auctions, said: "The Reliant exceeded all expectations. The atmosphere in the sales room was electric and the bidding was fast and furious. We're delighted with what was achieved on the day."
