Alfa Romeo reveals new Stelvio Quadrifoglio – one of the fastest SUVs in the world
Iconic Italian brand Alfa Romeo has launched a product offensive right into the Porsche Macan's heart, with the launch of the new Stelvio Quadrifoglio. This 503bhp super-SUV is equipped with a 2.9-litre twin-turbocharged V6 engine, and offers more performance than just about anything else in its class.
With a 0-60 time of less than 3.8 seconds, the Stelvio QV undercuts the fastest Porsche Macan – the Turbo with Performance Pack - by 0.6 seconds. That it has 503bhp to the Macan's 434bhp may help matters. It will go on to a top speed of 176mph – just 10mph down on the so-called 'fastest SUV in the world', the Bentley Bentayga.
While the Stelvio is currently only available with 2.2-litre diesel or 2.0-litre petrol powerplants, the Quadrifoglio will debut with an all-aluminium, Ferrari-inspired V6 lifted straight from the smaller Giulia Quadrifoglio saloon. It will be mated exclusively to an eight-speed automatic gearbox, which Alfa Romeo claims can shift in just 150 milliseconds.
Equipped with four-wheel drive as standard, Alfa Romeo claims the Stelvio QV offers 'unbeatable performance, traction, driving pleasure and safety'. It remains rear-driven for the majority of the time, but up to 50 per cent of the engine's power can be sent to the front wheels.
With a more spacious interior and practical hatchback boot compared with the Giulia saloon, the new Stelvio QV could become the potent performance car for those who've outgrown a super-saloon. It will arrive on sale in the UK in summer 2018. Prices have not yet been confirmed, but expect the range to kick off above £65,000.
