Porsche heads back to basics with new 911 Carrera Touring
The iconic Porsche 911 has gone in two directions as years have passed. While standard models have become ever more luxurious, comfortable, and – yes – heavy, versions like the GT3 RS are some of the most extreme driver's cars on the road, with more power than most drivers will ever manage to utilise.
Now though, 911 aficionados will have a new option in the range. It's called the 911 Carrera T (for Touring) and aims to offer a car closer to the 911's original ethos – lightweight, puritanical and reasonably priced.
As such, the Carrera T mixes aspects from all areas of the 911's model line-up. It takes a GT3 RS approach to weight saving – with lightweight seats, thinner glass, a lack of sound deadening and the deletion of the rear seats. The doors feature nylon loops to open them, as opposed to handles.
The end result is a kerb weight of just 1,425kg. That's 20kg less than a standard 911 Carrera.
Meanwhile the car's driver-focused aspects have been ramped up. The Carrera T comes with a PASM sports chassis as standard, lowering ride height by 20mm. It also receives the Sport Chrono Package, extra aerodynamic additions on the front spoiler, and optional four-wheel steering.
As standard, the Carrera T is a manual, with Porsche's 7-speed stick shift having its ratios shortened compared to the standard car. It's also available as a dual-clutch PDK automatic with launch control.
Porsche claims 0-60mph in under 4.5 seconds – closer to 4.0 seconds when fitted with the PDK auto. Combined with a top speed of 180mph, the Carrera T is certainly as fast as a 911 should be, but will hopefully offer driving involvement to rival the GT3 RS.
The model will start from £85,576 in the UK, with deliveries beginning in January 2018.
