Comedian Jerry Lewis dies at 91

American comedian Jerry Lewis has died aged 91.

A statement from his family revealed the star passed away of natural causes at his home in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Born in New Jersey, Lewis started his showbiz career at the tender age of five.

During the 1940s, he became known as the funny sidekick to Dean Martin in a series of TV shows, movies and stage productions.

He was well known for his philanthropy, having hosting a fundraising telethon for 44 years and acting as chairman of the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
