Briton fighting for life after being shot for £10 in Philippines

A British man was critically injured when he was shot during a robbery on the island of Cebu in the Philippines on Thursday.

Tarek Naggar, 44, from East Dunbartonshire, was attacked for less than £10 when three men pulled up on a scooter and demanded he handed over his wallet, the Evening Standard reports.

When he refused, the Scotsman was shot in the chest, before they escaped with his wallet, credit cards and cash.

He had been sat outside a bar with his fiancée Angie and best man Chris McLaughlin in the capital, Cebu City.

Speaking to BBC Scotland, McLaughlin said he was treated at a nearby emergency room, and then transferred to a hospital.

"The surgeon said the bullet went in the right side but ricocheted and travelled over to the left lung," he said. "Miraculously it didn't go through his heart, it actually went behind his heart."

Another friend has set up a crowd funding appeal to raise money for Mr Naggar's medical costs.

A Foreign Office spokesperson said: "We are assisting a British national who was shot during a robbery in Cebu, Philippines, and are in touch with local authorities."
