Tactical voting to play a big part, says poll

Four in 10 AOL UK users plan to vote tactically in the general election, according to a new poll.

People who vote in this way are usually trying to stop one candidate from winning because their preferred choice is perceived as having no chance of topping the poll in their constituency under the first-past-the-post system.

A tactical voting website has been set up for those who can't face five years of Conservative government. Tactical 2017 allows users to find their constituency and then learn which party has the best chance of stopping the Tory candidate from winning.

So, for example, Labour supporters in Twickenham and Richmond Park are being advised to vote for the Lib Dems, while Lib Dem supporters in Ilford North and Tooting are being informed that only Labour can beat the Tories. Find your constituency here.

More than 700 AOL UK users responded to the poll, which ran on June 6, when 40% said they would vote tactically. The poll is still running (below) and users can cast their vote.
