Euromillions son takes winner to court

Lottery winner, David Dawes, has won a court battle against his son Michael, who wanted more of his £101 million jackpot. The judge ruled there was "no basis on which any rational or normal human being could conclude that they could go back for more money whenever they wanted."

David Dawes won £101 million on EuroMillions with his wife Angela in 2011 (pictured). The pair gave David's son Michael almost £1.6 million in the two years after the win. He and his partner James Beedle spent £550,000 on a house in Portsmouth, where Michael lived. They also gave £250,000 to James' family. Michael also gave up his job in IT, and by 2013, their share of the money had run out.

According to the Daily Mail, David told the court that he had no idea that so much money had been given away, so he was shocked when his son asked for more money in 2012. At that point, he continued to top up his funds. However, by March 2013, he grew concerned at how his son was burning through cash, so called a family meeting.

The Telegraph reported that David and Angela agreed to pay off some of the couple's debts, but made it clear they would not be handing over any more money. That November, David and Michael argued, when Michael asked for £5 million more: they have not spoken since.

Michael then took his father to court, but the judge was unimpressed. He said it was not reasonable for Michael to have expected a never-ending flow of cash. He added that Michael and James' spending was 'astonishing'. They were spending £20,000-£30,000 a month at one point - including a £1,000 grocery bill. And he dismissed the claim.

David and Angela have given £30 million of their win to family and friends - including £1 million to each of their children. They also set up their own charity.

Family rows

This isn't the only family who have fallen out in the aftermath of a lottery win. Gillian Bayford (a £148 million EuroMillions winner) fell out her father and brother Colin. The story hit the headlines last year, when she revealed the win had torn them apart. She said she gave them £20 million of the win, but they came back for more.

In 2013, Alex Robertson, who won £3.1 million as part of a syndicate of coach drivers, was in the news after falling out with his son - also called Alex. His son told the papers that his father had said he would get nothing - and that all he'd given him was 200 cigarettes for his birthday.

However, while any family row is hard to bear, they may be able to console themselves with the fact that one lottery winner had an even tougher time with his family. Jeffrey Dampier won $20 million on the Illinois Lottery in 1996. In 2005 he had an affair with his sister-in-law, and lavished her with gifts and a home. Unfortunately for him, she was just stringing him along, and all the time she was plotting with her real boyfriend to rob him. To make matters worse, during the robbery something went wrong, and Jeffrey was shot and killed.
