Man dies after being hit by car following 'altercation'

A man has died after he was seriously injured when he was hit by a car following an "altercation", police have said.

Richard Broughton, 37, suffered serious injuries in an incident in Welland Crescent, Elsecar, near Barnsley, on Friday evening, South Yorkshire Police said.

A spokesman said Mr Broughton died in hospital on Sunday and a murder inquiry has now been launched.

He said: "The 37-year-old man, named as Richard Broughton, suffered fatal injuries after an altercation where it is reported he was struck by a car in Welland Crescent, Elsecar.

"His family are receiving support from officers and ask that their privacy be respected during this difficult time.

"A post mortem examination will be carried out in due course and officers are now treating this as a murder investigation.

"Police remain keen to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the incident, which took place just before 7pm on Friday April 28, or anyone who may hold information about those that may have been involved."

The spokesman said the car involved in the incident is thought to be a Suzuki Swift.

The car failed to stop at the scene but a Suzuki Swift matching the description was recovered by police in the Shaftesbury Drive area of Elsecar.
