Hiker missing in Himalayas for 47 days found alive

Two Taiwanese hikers who were missing for 47 days in the Himalayas have been found, but only one survived.

Liang Sheng-yueh, 21, and his 18-year-old girlfriend, Liu Chen-chun, set out to hike Nepal's Himalayan Mountains on March 9th.

A snowstorm caused the couple to lose their bearings and take shelter in a small cave.

CNN reports that the couple survived for many days by eating salt and melted snow once their food ran out. But just three days before being rescued, Liang's girlfriend died.

Liang and his girlfriend's body were airlifted to the Grande International hospital in Kathmandu.

The hospital's medical director said Liang did not have any serious injuries but that he "was not very stable psychologically". He had maggots between his toes and lice in his hair.

According to the New York Post, Liang lost 66 pounds. One of his rescuers said he was "very happy" to see them and greeted them by saying "Namaste".

He is recovering in hospital and reportedly slurped down six bowls of soup on his first night.

In 2013, a tourist in California went days trapped under rocks on a hill without any food or water.

Hiker Ramon Llamas and his German shepherd-mix discovered the man on Mount Rubidoux.

"I said to the guy, 'You need help? Are you OK?' When he reacted, he says, 'Somebody there? Please don't leave me. Don't leave me,'" Llamas said.

"'You got some water?' And I gave him water, and a minute later, he said, 'You got some more?' Are you by yourself? 'Ya, I'm a tourist here. I'm hungry.'"

An hour later, rescue workers were able to free the 44-year-old man, whose foot was stuck under the rocks. He was hospitalised with symptoms of dehydration.
