Hull residents hit with £70 fines for parking on their driveways

Confused residents in Hull have spoken of their horror after the council ordered them to pay a £70 fine - for parking on their own driveways.

The homeowners in East Yorkshire were shocked to discover the penalty charge notices on a number of windscreens of cars parked outside their homes on Tuesday 18 April.

Julie Pelham, 53, has lived on the road for two-and-a-half years and found a ticket placed on her son's black BMW. She said: "There was a ticket on my son's car even though it was parked on the driveway and the neighbour had one too and I thought 'what the hell is going on?'"

The Hull Daily Mail reports that the fines were issued by East Riding Council and stated that the cars were "parked with one or more wheels on or over a footpath or any part of a road other than a carriageway."

But Mrs Pelham says her son's car was not hanging over the footpath and that it was "completely on the driveway".

Residents are now avoiding further fines by parking their cars on the main road.

A council spokesperson told the newspaper: "The council has written to residents on First Lane in the past regarding this in an attempt to discourage people from parking on these vehicle crossings. They are for the sole purpose of allowing vehicles to gain access to a private driveway or garage."

They added that "anyone who receives a parking penalty notice and believes they should not have been given one has the legal right to appeal to the council's enforcement team."
