Watch as a Ford GT breaks the standing mile speed record by 10mph

The standing quarter mile has long been the yardstick by which performance cars are measured, but it's the standing mile where the impressive numbers can be found. The world record, though, is not held by a Bugatti or some wing-festooned Formula 1 car, but a Ford, and these videos show it smashing the old previous top speed by 10mph.

The car – a 2006 GT with a 5.4-litre engine, upgraded ignition and engine management systems and specially developed suspension and aerodynamics – is thought to have between 2,000 and 2,500bhp, which is enough to take it to 293.6mph just one mile after it set off from a standing start.
