Car curling match held on Russian skating rink

Russia's first ever car curling tournament was held on an ice rink in the city of Yekaterinburg.

The new sport sees cars sliding across the ice instead of stones.

According to UPI, the tournament was sponsored by a local car insurance company and featured four teams of ten people pushing small Oka cars toward the curling markings.

There were no windows for safety and the engines were removed to make the cars lighter.

RT reports that no brooms were used and the driver was allowed to steer the car once the other nine team members let go.

Loud bangs were heard on the ice rink during the tournament and the winners received a cheque of 100,000 rubles (£1,385).

Andrey Gubaydullin, from the winning team, told AP: "We allocated our force right. We had an excellent strategy: we knew which car to push first and which at the end, and that's why we won."
