17% of mothers still lend money to their adult children, survey finds

Mothers are more likely than fathers to continue giving their children cash handouts after they have grown up, a survey has found.

One in six (17%) mothers with adult children say they lend them money, compared with around one in 10 (9%) fathers, Nationwide Building Society found.

And 16% of mothers with adult children still cook and bake for them, compared with 2% of fathers.

Some 15% of mothers still wash or iron their fully-fledged offspring's clothes, as do 1% of fathers.

Fathers are, however, more likely to pass on DIY expertise to their adult children, with 11% doing this, compared with 4% of mothers, the research among 2,000 people found.

The research was released ahead of Mother's Day on March 26.
