Police in London showed that patrols aren't always all about fighting crime when one officer stopped to rescue a baby squirrel stranded in the middle of the road.

The little squirrel was just a few days old and had become separated from its mother, reports the Evening Standard.

MPS Hackney shared pictures of the scene on Twitter, writing: "The problem solving team found a lost baby squirrel today, safely reunited with its Mother. Not what you normally find on burglary patrols!"

A number of users praised the officer's actions on Twitter. One wrote: "Taken into custody, back up not required. Respect to the thin blue line caring for everything.""

One woman said: "Poor little mite. Hope it was a red not a grey tho'...

To which MPS Hackney joked: "We don't discriminate against squirrels."

The cute squirrel was reunited with mum thanks to the team.

Speaking to the Metro, a Hackney police spokesperson said they had been on burglary patrol looking for wanted offenders when one officer spotted the baby.

"There was queuing traffic and PC Emmett went to them to investigate and found a baby squirrel abandoned in the middle of the road," said the spokesperson.

"He picked it up and managed to find the mother who was moving her young from one nest to another which was on the other side of a busy road.

"Due to the traffic this resulted in her dropping one of them in the road. Found the nest, left it near the mother who then collected the baby."
