UK weather: Freezing fog could cause travel chaos

Commuters have been warned that a blanket of freezing fog set to descend on the UK could create potentially hazardous driving conditions and delays at airports.

The Met Office suggests freezing fog will hit London on Monday and Tuesday mornings.

A yellow 'be aware' severe weather warning for fog has been issued for the East of England, south west England and south east England.

The warning reads: "Areas of fog are likely to start to form in places during Sunday evening but the main problems would appear to be more likely during Monday morning rush hour.

"Areas of dense and freezing fog may lead to journeys taking longer than usual, with possible delays to air travel. Watch out, too, for slippery surfaces."

According to the Press Association, Met Office forecaster Steven Keates said: "We are likely to see some dense freezing fog patches developing (in the south east), particularly through the early hours, which could impact some travel through the course of Monday's rush hour.

"There will be difficult driving conditions and delays at some airports - including the London airports."

He added: "We ask everyone to be aware of the potential impact the fog will have on the roads.

"Take it steady, allow a bit of extra time for your journey.

"If you have got an early morning flight it might be worth double checking, just to make sure there are no delays at the airport."

A low of -8C was recorded in parts of Hampshire overnight on Friday, while much of England saw the mercury dip to -5C.

Freezing temperatures experienced over the weekend will also continue into next week, although it will be mainly dry.
