UK weather: Frosty start to 2017

The new year is set to bring freezing temperatures and frost for Britain as a cold snap marks the start of 2017.

Weather forecasters have predicted wintry showers for parts of the country over the next few days.

For Sunday night, the Met Office says: "Rain will slowly clear the south of England overnight, leaving clear periods. This will bring a cold night with widespread frost, but with further wintry showers expected in the north and east.

Yellow weather warnings for ice on the roads have been issued for Northern Ireland, Scotland, Yorkshire and the North.

For Monday, it will be a frosty start for some, and then dry with sunshine for most, while feeling cold.

"However, wintry showers will affect eastern coasts of England, and parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland," the Met Office adds.

From Tuesday to Thursday, some rain is likely at times in the north and west. Many regions will be dry and rather cold with sunny spells and overnight frost.

Speaking to the Daily Telegraph, Met Office forecaster Charles Powell said: "Not only will it be a frosty start to the week but there will be some icy stretches to contend with. But a good deal of sunshine. Staying wintry and a colder feeling day for all. Do wrap up warm if you want to head out."
