'Iranian' asylum seeker picked up in kayak off Kent coast

An asylum seeker was picked up in a kayak in the Channel off the UK coast.

Sources reportedly said the man - said to be Iranian - had been living in the "Jungle" camp in Calais until it was demolished last week.

It is understood Border Force and the Maritime and Coastguard Agency responded to a report of a kayak being spotted by a ferry off the Kent coast at around 12.30pm on Saturday.

A Border Force cutter was deployed and picked up the man in the kayak.

It is thought he was found around eight miles off the UK coast. His case will be dealt with in line with immigration rules, the Home Office said.

The man is believed to be around 30 years old, according to Sky News. Work to dismantle the Jungle, where thousands of migrants had been living, started last week.
