London's cheaper, 'hipster friendly' Airbnb homes seeing highest demand

London tourists booking their accommodation through Airbnb are favouring cheaper, "hipster friendly" destinations like Hackney and Shoreditch, research suggests.

Tower Hamlets, the East London borough that includes Docklands and Bow, was found to be the most in-demand destination in London for travellers using Airbnb.

The research, from Airbnb property management service My Property Host, found landlords in Tower Hamlets who let out their home through the property-sharing marketplace have an average occupancy rate of 94%.

Meanwhile, those letting out their home in Hackney, which includes Stoke Newington and Shoreditch, have a typical occupancy rate of 90%, putting it second on the list.

Kensington and Chelsea was in third place, which though more expensive than the top two destinations is always popular with tourists, the report said. The typical occupancy rate there is 87%.

The City of London came fourth on the list, with landlords getting a typical occupancy rate of 86%, followed by Highbury and Islington in fifth place, with an average occupancy rate of 83%.

My Property Host managing director Elena Lopez said the popularity of Tower Hamlets and Hackney "is down to their combination of good transport links, trendy reputation and competitive nightly rates".
