Passengers were trapped on the ride for one hour and 45 minutes, while the theme park's staff rushed to help the thrillseekers.

According to Metro, the ride, dubbed 'the world's most terrifying roller coaster' was later closed and remained closed on Sunday.

A Thorpe Park spokesperson told the Sun: "An assisted exit is when our team manually remove guests from the attraction.

"As part of our safety procedures harnesses are used on specific parts of rides as a safety precaution – no one was lowered on a harness, it was an added safety measure.

"The total time it took to clear the attraction was one hour and 45 minutes."

The spokesperson added: "The ride was taken out of action today to add additional cars because we are busy."

Earlier this year, eight people were rescued from a roller coaster after it stopped working around 20ft off the ground.

Firefighters were called to M&D's theme park in Motherwell, North Lanarkshire when the Tornado roller coaster stopped with members of the public still in the carriages, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said.

A cherry picker was used by fire crews who safely removed five youths, two women and one man from the ride.
