This eerie image taking social media by storm is a satellite image of Hurricane Matthew.

But that's not what most people are seeing when they look at it - because a smirking skull is what pops to mind.

The image is everywhere and has been dubbed the 'scary skull of Matthew'.

But is it real or has it been photoshopped?

The Weather Channel's senior meteorologist, Stu Ostro, said that absolutely no editing has gone into the image; this is exactly how it appeared initially.

He said: "This is some really freaky, sinister looking face which unfortunately is consistent with the hurricane being sinister because it's already been deadly and destructive."

It's expected to hit the east coast of America later this week.
