A Montana man was left severely battered and bloodied after surviving not one, but two attacks by a grizzly bear apparently protecting her cubs from a perceived danger.

Todd Orr, 50, was on an early morning hike near Ennis when he encountered the protective mother bear, which attacked the adventurer's head.

Orr survived the ordeal, covering his extremities and using bear spray to ward off the animal.

But while on the way back to his truck, he was attacked by the same bear a few minutes later.

Speaking on camera just after the incident, Todd says: "Just had a grizzly with two cubs come at me from about 80 yards."

The footage shows a huge amount of blood dripping down the man's face.

He adds: "I went on my face and protected the back of my neck. She got my head good, I don't know what's under my hat."

"My ear, my arm and then my shoulder. It's ripped up. I think my arm's broke."

Orr managed to walk three miles to his car and then drive himself 17 miles to the hospital.

Doctors stitched his wounds, including a five-inch gash along the side of his head.
