A man has been arrested after wearing a bikini fashioned from see-through plastic wrap on a beach in New Jersey.

Stephen Wojciehowski, 59, was charged with lewdness after a police investigation revealed he spent two days on the beach "wearing a homemade, clear plastic wrap bikini, where his genitals were clearly exposed and observed" by other people on the public beach, reports NJ.com.

The Beach Haven Police Department uploaded its full statement about the incident on its Facebook page.

It read: "On September 26, 2016, Beach Haven Police Det. Joseph Boehler arrested Stephen Wojciehowski, 59, of Cedar Run for the alleged act of Lewdness on the Ocean Street Beach.

"The investigation and subsequent arrest were initiated on Wednesday (9/14) based upon information provided by several eye witnesses.

"Based on the reported information, Stephen Wojciehowski spent two days on the beach, wearing a homemade, clear plastic wrap bikini, where his genitals were clearly exposed and observed by the public, on the public beach.

"The facts developed as a result of the investigation led to arrest and subsequent charge of Lewdness.

"Stephen Wojciehowsk was arrested, charged, and released pending future court proceedings. The Beach Haven Police would like to thank the public for their assistance with this matter.

"The media and the public are reminded that criminal charges are merely accusations and that the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty."
