Police launch new appeal to find girl's killer 45 years on

A fresh appeal to find the killer of a teenager whose body was discovered dumped on waste ground in 1971 has been launched by police.

Dorothy Leyden, 17, was found raped and murdered in Collyhurst, Manchester, after she had been on a night out with friends.

She spent the evening of April 24 1971 watching soul singer Jimmy Ruffin at the Golden Garter nightclub in Wythenstowe, before heading into central Manchester.

At around 2.30am, she climbed out of a taxi she had shared with friends at Piccadilly Gardens bus station and it is thought she decided to walk home.

Her defiled body was found behind the Spread Eagle pub by a young girl the following day.

Decades on, police will make an appeal to the public for information concerning the murder, on BBC One's Crimewatch programme on Monday.

As part of the appeal, her sister Pat Atkinson recalled the moment officers came to their front door to break the news of her sister's killing.

Clearly emotional, she told the programme: "I remember the police coming to the front door and I just went out playing and when I came home my mum called me into the living room.

"I think she told us all one at a time and she just told me that Dorothy had been beaten and she'd died."
