Japanese man fights off bear with karate

A 63-year-old man in Japan escaped a bear attack when he performed a karate move, punching the six-foot animal in the eyes before it ran away.

Atsushi Aoki was fishing in the Gunma Prefecture when the black bear emerged from woodland and set upon him, Sky News reports.

He used his bare hands to fight off the animal after being knocked to the floor.

According to Japan Times, he was left with a scratched face and bites to his head, forehead, right arm and right thigh.

He managed to drive himself to the hospital to be treated.

Gunma police said it had received witness reports of a bear in the area recently.

An official said: "If you witness a bear, don't fight. Walk away quietly and report it to the police instead."
