Officials said urgent maintenance work will be carried out but according to America's CNN Network, a spokesman told them that the record-breaking bridge was "overwhelmed by the volume of visitors".

When asked if the bridge was cracked or broken, the spokesperson reportedly said "there was no problem" and confirmed there had been no accidents.

Demand for the attraction was reportedly 10 times the daily allowance of 8,000 visitors.

The bridge's management released a statement on China's micro blogging site Weibo, writing that the government chose to close the bridge due to the "urgency to improve and update" the site.

According to the BBC, one social media user responded: "I have booked everything and now you are saying you are closed... Are you kidding me?"

The glass-bottomed walkway spans 984 feet and is 590 feet above ground. The floor is made of double-layered glass that is 24mm and is reportedly 25 times stronger than regular window glass.
