A freight train has fallen into a river after a railway bridge collapsed as the locomotive passed over it.

Six wagons plunged into the Tolten River, and the train was carrying chemicals like sodium hyroxide, oil, and chlorate.

According to Euro News, the accident happened at around 4pm local time on Thursday as the train was passing through the city of Pitrufquen towards San Jose de la Mariquina.



The site adds that locals within 10km were being advised not to drink the water, although there was no immediate evidence of contamination.

Miraculously, nobody was injured in the accident. The Mirror reports that it's unclear exactly why the bridge collapsed, but authorities are investigating.
