Uber set to take on Google by building its own maps

Uber is spending half a billion dollars to build its own mapping system to replace Google Maps.

The taxi app wants to ditch its reliance on traditional software from the likes of Google and Apple, and has deployed its own mapping cars in North America and Mexico. This might seem counter-intuitive when most would think these maps work well enough, but there is method to the madness.
