Rio 2016: Wonderful Wu extends golden run

Updated:

Wu Minxia enhanced her sensational record in the Olympic Games on Sunday by claiming gold alongside Shi Tingmao in the women's synchronised three metre springboard final.

The winner of the same event in Athens, Beijing and London, Wu again tasted victory in Rio after recording a superb score of 345.60 in partnership with Shi.

That was enough to comfortably secure a fifth Olympic gold in all for Wu, who also triumphed in the three metre springboard event four years ago.

Wu is the first diver to win four Olympic gold medals in a single event. In addition, she is now the oldest Olympic gold medallist in women's diving, at the age of 30.

Yet the champion revealed she had considered retirement ahead of Rio 2016.

"I thought about giving up before these Olympic Games because I got injured for a month and I thought it would take a lot of time to recover," said Wu.

"It's really hard to maintain my best performance. I got much more mental tension than physical tension before these Games.

Asked if she will now bring an end to her illustrious career, Wu added: "Probably, yes.

"It's not easy. It's hard to explain how much effort you need to put into this training process."
