Driver arrested after boy, nine, killed while crossing road

A nine-year-old boy has died after being hit by a car as he crossed the road.

The 25-year-old driver of a white BMW 4 Series has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and is currently in custody, Lancashire Police said.

The collision happened in Whalley New Road in Blackburn at 10.55pm on Thursday.

The boy suffered multiple injuries and was taken to hospital, where he died.

Police are appealing for information.

Sergeant David Hurst, of the Road Policing Unit, said: "This is a tragic incident where a young boy has sadly died, and my thoughts very much remain with his family at this time.

"An investigation into the collision is under way and I would appeal to anyone who was in the area at the time and may have witnessed the collision to contact us as soon as possible."
