Travellers visiting the home of Broadway, Central Park and the Empire State Building fork out £831 just for accommodation in New York, while a taxi fare costs between £80 to £85, compared to just £6 in Bali.

"Even when you add the cost of a flight to the Vietnamese capital, our research of booking rates on TripAdvisor still found that it is possible to budget for a full trip to Hanoi for little more than the average on-the-ground cost of staying in New York over the same dates," commented TripAdvisor spokesperson, Hayley Coleman.

Accommodation makes up 61 per cent of the total spend on a trip to New York.

While a number of Asian cities were named the cheapest destinations, Tokyo followed New York on the most expensive list, with London placed third and Cancun coming fourth on the list.

The total cost of a three-night break in London for two people during the summer period if £1,060, with accommodation priced at an average of £604, entrance to visitor attractions costing £55.20 and dinner costing £224.

Summer might be one of the most expensive times for a holiday in many cities, but it is still possible to bring the costs down by choosing more affordable hotel options.

TripAdvisor has revealed some of the best value hotels which are at least £60 cheaper than the city average, including the Distrikt Hotel in New York, bookable on TripAdvisor for £215. In Tokyo, you can bag a bargain at the highly rated Richmond hotel Asakusa for £117, and visitors to London can stay at the Westbridge Hotel for £131.
