Janet Street-Porter has strong views about Pippa Middleton's 'grotesque' engagement ring

Updated:

Janet Street-Porter has criticised Pippa Middleton's engagement ring, saying it is 'grotesque'.

Appearing on ITV's Loose Women, the media personality joined her co-stars in discussing the item of jewellery after the bride-to-be revealed it on Tuesday.

Pippa, 32, became engaged to hedge fund manager James Matthews on July 17.

The younger sister of the Duchess of Cambridge was pictured smiling while showing off the sparkling diamond-topped band on her left ring finger.

The octagonal ring is estimated to have cost £200,000 by several jewellery experts.

Janet, 69, said she finds the concept of wearing a ring "out of date" and likened it to being "handcuffed".

She said: "Why waste the money on the ring? Looking at it another way, that ring is valued at between £200,000 and £250,000 and I think that's grotesque in this day and age.

"Especially if your sister is married to a member of the royal family. I think that's really, really vulgar."

Four-times divorced Janet added that the ring is "ostentatious" and suggested the sum of money would be better spent as a charitable donation.

Pippa and James confirmed their happy engagement news in a brief joint statement.

"Miss Pippa Middleton and Mr James Matthews are delighted to announce they became engaged on Sunday 17th July and plan to marry next year," they said.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have also shared their joy over the couple's engagement news.

A spokesman for the Cambridges said: "The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are absolutely delighted with the news."

The Duchess was given a sapphire and diamond ring - worth an estimated £300,000 - by husband Prince William when he proposed in 2010.

The item previously belonged to his mother Diana, Princess of Wales and was worth £28,000 when it was purchased in 1981.
