Spain has been named the best holiday destination in the world in a new travel poll.

The European hotspot was voted the number one destination by sun-seeking Brits in a survey by On the Beach. While France receives the most visitors in the world, it only came third in the poll after Italy, which was a close second.

Spain, which is home to incredible locations such as Barcelona, Ibiza and the lesser-known Cies Islands, offers something for everyone. The country was praised for having the friendliest locals, sharing the top spot with Greece in this category, and was closely followed by Malta and Portugal for their welcoming people.

It also reigned in the best night out category, with one in four holidaymakers naming Spain the best destination for a night out on the town. Greece came second for its nightlife, followed by France.

When it comes to beaches, Spain is king and beat Greece and even Portugal's Algarve region, which has more than 80 Blue Flag beaches.

The only category in which Spain lost its top spot was in the best food category which was won by Italy with 25 per cent of the vote. Famous for its paella, the county came in second place and was followed by France.
