Dear Jeremy,

This is a very hard letter to write. We have been friends for some years and as my former MP I hold you in very high regard as one of the kindest and most committed public servants in politics.

However, I am sorry to say it has become clear beyond doubt to me that you and your team are not providing the strong, forward looking and competent leadership we need to provide an alternative government to these increasingly right wing Conservatives that are doing such damage to this country and to my constituency.

This has been brought home to me over the last couple of weeks by the lacklustre referendum campaign. But it had been increasingly clear to me for some time that the Leadership is not in touch with the hopes, the fears and the aspirations of my local constituents.

I have had a number of party members, and many many Labour voting members of the public, tell me this weekend that they do not have confidence in your leadership and asking me to sign the motion of no confidence that was proposed for Monday. I'm afraid I share their view and do not believe the Labour Party under your leadership is, or ever will be, in good enough shape to go to the public in an election and ask to serve them in government.

I am therefore tendering my resignation as Shadow Minister for Civil Society - a post in which it has been an incredible honour to serve.

:: Toby Perkins' resignation letter in full:

Dear Jeremy,

I am writing to inform you that I am resigning from the post of Shadow Armed Forces Minister with immediate effect.

It has been a great honour to serve in your shadow Defence team, and to see first-hand the work our Armed Forces personnel do, they truly are second to none.

It is with deep regret that I walk away from this role, but no-one who has spent the last six weeks in daily conversations with voters in the North of England, as I have in Chesterfield, could be under any illusions about how urgently the Labour Party needs a change at the top.

I note that you continue to refer back to the mandate you received last September. I have to tell you that I have been contacted by many of the people so enthused by your victory last year, to urge me to persuade you to stand down.

I am still uncertain whether you believe that you did all you could to secure votes during the recent EU Referendum campaign and this ambiguity certainly fed through to voters. Either way. it does not augur well for any General Election campaign.

The Labour Party is a more important institution than any of us, not just to its members but to the whole country. To allow it to risk the catastrophe it will surely face, if you lead us into the General Election campaign, would be a betrayal of my members, constituents and the wider country.

As others have said, whilst most members hold you in great esteem, the majority who have contacted me also recognise that you are not destined to become Prime Minister and hope that you will stand down at the earliest opportunity to allow our party to approach the next General Election with confidence.

Stephen Kinnock's resignation letter in full

Dear Jeremy,

I have the deepest respect for your long service to our party and for the consistency with which you have served as an MP and as our Leader.

However, in light of the deeply disappointing referendum result caused, in part, by the half-hearted and lacklustre role that you played in the campaign, I have come to the conclusion that you are no longer able to lead our party.

Furthermore, British politics will be completely dominated in the coming years by the Brexit negotiations, and I do not believe that you have the requisite skills or experience to ensure that there is a strong Labour voice at the negotiating table as we undertake this monumentally complex task.

It is therefore with regret that I am hereby resign as Parliamentary Private Secretary to Angela Eagle, Shadow First Secretary of State and Shadow Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills.
