Aldi has been named as Grocer of the Year by the Grocer magazine, the latest in a string of awards.

The budget supermarket pipped both Lidl and Ocado to win the trophy, and was also awarded Own Label Range of the Year for its parenting and baby range Mamia.

"We're thrilled to have been named The Grocer of the Year 2016. The recognition by The Grocer Gold Awards provides consumers with the assurance that Aldi is the best supermarket in Britain," says CEO Matthew Barnes.

"We remain dedicated to offering our customers the highest quality products at everyday low prices, and as we continue to open new stores in 2016, we hope more and more people throughout the UK will choose to come to us for their full weekly shop."

Meanwhile, Mars and Greencore were given Gold awards as Branded and Own-label Supplier of the year respectively, and Tesco was named as Britain's favourite supermarket.

Alpro won Brand of the Year and Diageo was named Drinks Brand of the Year for its Smirnoff Red. Fentimans picked up the award for Exporter of the Year and Daylesford Organic won the award for Fine Food Retailer of the Year.

Aldi now has a bigger share of the UK market than ever, at 6%, according to analyst firm Kantar Worldpanel. It was recently named as the UK's cheapest supermarket - with prices as much as a third lower than some of its competitors.

But the store has consistently focused on quality, regularly scooping prizes in taste tests. In May, it picked up an astonishing 40 awards from The Grocer for its own-brand products, including 19 gold medals.

Its latest offering is wagyu steak, widely regarded as the best in the world thanks to its distinctive marbling. But whereas a wagyu steak could cost you £50 or more in a restaurant, Aldi is asking just £7.29.

But you'll need to move fast, as the offer is for a limited time only, and the store is restricting sales to two steaks per customer.
