Easyjet award family double cost of their trip as compensation

The Mortimore family were devastated when they were unable to go on their long-awaited half term holiday to Tenerife last week.

They were unable to board their Easyjet flight because other passengers refused to swap seats so the parents, Jay and Carolyn, could sit with their two children, Ryley, 12, and Brayden, seven.

The family from Devon were forced to cancel their £2,300 trip because the flight had been overbooked and when they arrived at the airport they were only issued with three tickets.

Jay Mortimore was then informed that he would be put on the reserve list in case a ticket became available. His mother, who was travelling with them, then volunteered her own ticket for her son and he was able to board while she took his place on the standby list.

When they finally got onto the plane there were no spaces available for two people to sit next to each other. It is regulation that children have to be sat next to an adult so the flight attendant asked if anyone would volunteer to swap seats.

When no passengers spoke up, Carolyn, Jay and the children were forced off the flight and unable to continue to Tenerife for their holiday.

According to the Sun the family had shelled out £2,300 for their trip and Jay's mother was also due to join them.

The family, who booked their holiday through Thomas Cook, were initially only offered £800 in compensation but the story has garnered so much national attention that both the travel companies have now offered to hand over more.

Easyjet and Thomas Cook have since offered the Mortimores £3,640 as well as £600 worth of holiday vouchers.
