Hollywood stars turn out for Glamour Women Of The Year awards

Hollywood royalty descended on London for the Glamour Women Of The Year Awards on Tuesday.

The star-studded gathering, held in a specially built marquee in Mayfair's Berkeley Square, saw famous names from the world of entertainment recognised at the event hosted by Claudia Winkleman.

Some of the celebs who walked the red carpet into the venue, decorated in hues of blue and pink, included Sigourney Weaver, Susan Sarandon, Stanley Tucci and Naomie Harris.

Other guests included Kourtney Kardashian, Jack Whitehall, Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid, Jennifer Saunders and Dawn French, Davina McCall, Caroline Flack and David Gandy.

More than 700,000 votes were cast for the awards which are in their 13th year and include categories ranging from sportswoman, UK TV actress, fashion designer, TV personality and Glamour icon.

Guests enjoyed canapes and champagne on arrival, before being treated to a three course meal of burrata, cod and truffled potato and pistachio parfait.

Kicking off the awards Winkleman told the packed venue that the event is "better than Christmas".

"These awards are not chosen by four thin people staring at a biscuit, these are actual voted for by humans," she said.

"If you win it means you are amazing and you are the best."

Bagging the first award of the evening for TV personality of the year, presented by Ant and Dec, was Holly Willoughby.

Accepting her award the This Morning presenter quipped in reference to her intoxicated state on the TV show: "Last time I got an award - we know where that night ended up."

She added: "It means an awful lot to me - I got told off at school a lot for talking and now I've made a career out of it."

Tucci handed Elizabeth Banks the award for filmmaker.

He said before the presentation: "It is a great thing for women filmmakers - there needs to be more."

Hollywood director Banks told the room that she was missing her son's pre-school graduation to accept the award.

She added: "I know that this award is eventually going to remind me of the 289 million US dollar Pitch Perfect 2 made and not the fact that I am a terrible mother."

Donatella Versace received the award for fashion designer, appearing via video link and wearing her latest design, she said: "Fashion can give women the freedom to be who they want to be."

Little Mix picked up the award for Music Act of the year, presented by radio DJ, Greg James.

British tennis number one Johanna Konta scooped sportswoman of the year.

She said: "When I first knew I was nominated I had to ask my agent if I got a trophy.

"Growing up it was all about the silverware so it is so nice to get an award for something else."

Jack Whitehall, calling for a female James Bond to take up the lead next, presented Gemma Arterton with the Cointreau Theatre Actress Award.

She said: "Theatre, it means a lot to me to win this award. It is the love of my life and I feel alive when I am on stage.

"Winning this is just lovely."

Clara Amfo picked up the award for Radio Personality, presented by Craig David, and joked in her speech: "It is weird being here - it is like Glamour magazine has come to life."

And she told Susan Sarandon: "I love our work".

Reese Witherspoon bagged Entrepreneur and appeared by video link from her latest film set to accept the award.

X-men star, Sophie Turner, collected the award for UK TV actress and thanked everyone involved in Game of Thrones. She said she plays a "small part".

She said: "It is really down to the people who make this show (GoT) that make me give the best performance that I can."

Tinie Tempah handed performer Jess Glynne the award for Next Breakthrough.

She joked: "I sing, I don't really do speeches".

She added: "I have a massive team of women, they make me who I am."

Bond girl Naomie Harris, who played Miss Moneypenny, took home film actress and dedicated her award to her family saying "could not have done it without them".

James Norton took home the Man of the Year accolade, calling it an "enormous honour" to share the stage with a "group of extraordinary women".

Saunders received the Outstanding Contribution award, which was presented by her comedy partner French who joked: "Why exactly she has been rewarded for her continued bad behaviour and relentless showing off is beyond me."

Dedicating her award to the late comedian Victoria Wood, Saunders said she was a "great friend" and added that if she has made an outstanding contribution to anything, it was to "female friendships".

She added: "You get the most extraordinary gift bag if you win. It is huge. If I get through the creams I may live until to be 300."

Weaver claimed Glamour Icon of the Year and the Alien actress revealed she was a reader of Glamour growing up as a "six foot tall curly haired troll doll".

"This is a message in a bottle to all 12-year-old girls reading this online - if I can make it to be icon of the year, you can."

Joking about some of the revealing outfits on show, she added: "I really wanted to take a big pair of scissors and cut holes in my dress, I have too much material."

Sarandon scooped the gong for Glamour Inspiration and said her award will be going into the "famous bathroom" at her house where she keeps her Oscar for Dead Man Walking and other awards.

"I am inspired by women - no-one multi-tasks like women," she added.

"We have to stop worrying about being perfect and have as much fun as we can."
