Duke of Edinburgh to visit Veterans Aid's flagship hostel in London

The Duke of Edinburgh will today visit the flagship hostel of the charity Veterans Aid - his first engagement involving the public since he missed out on the Battle of Jutland anniversary.

Philip cancelled an appearance at the First World War commemoration event following medical advice, but has been attending Buckingham Palace engagements this week.

Yesterday the Duke, who celebrates his 95th birthday next week, joined the Queen as she held a private audience with the President of Germany, Joachim Gauck.

Philip flew home to London from Balmoral with the Queen on Tuesday after missing the wartime commemorations in Orkney.

The Duke's son-in-law, Vice-Admiral Sir Tim Laurence - who is married to the Princess Royal - described Philip as having had a minor ailment and said it would have been unwise for him to stand at the windswept ceremony for a long period of time.

Philip has not cancelled any engagements this week, and has not attended hospital.

Later today Philip will tour the Veterans Aid hostel in East London that is earmarked for a £7 million makeover.

The charity works to help ex-servicemen and women in crisis, specifically targeting the issues that might lead to homelessness.

This evening Philip will take the salute at Sounding Retreat on Horse Guards Parade.

The Massed Bands and Bugles of The Rifles' are returning to Horse Guards after nearly 25 years in support of the Regiment's Care for Casualties appeal.
