Man to go on trial accused of Tube station knife attack

Updated

A man will go on trial today accused of launching a vicious knife attack on a random stranger at a London Tube station "for Syria".

Muhaydin Mire, 30, of Sansom Road, Leytonstone, denies the attempted murder of a 56-year-old man at Leytonstone Tube station on December 5 last year.

It is alleged he repeatedly kicked the unnamed man before taking hold of his head and cutting a 5in (12cm) wound in his neck.

Much of the attack was captured on mobile phone footage which circulated widely on social media.

At an earlier hearing, Mire admitted four counts of attempted wounding on Daniel Bielinski, Serena Valori, David Pethers and Andrius Sabaliauskus during the same incident.

The Old Bailey trial before Judge Nicholas Hilliard QC is expected to last two weeks.

The defendant is in custody.
