Johnny Depp given restraining order after Amber Heard claims 'abuse'

Actor Johnny Depp has been issued with a restraining order after his estranged wife claimed she was a victim of domestic abuse.

The Hollywood star has been ordered by a judge to stay 100 yards away from actress Amber Heard, who has filed for divorce saying she lives "in fear" of her husband.

In papers filed with the Los Angeles Superior County Court, Heard, 30, said Depp threw a mobile phone at her at their Los Angeles penthouse last Saturday, striking her cheek and eye.

She claimed Depp had a "history of drug and alcohol abuse" and been "verbally and physically abusive" during their 15-month marriage.

Heard submitted a picture to the court showing her bruised face, which she said was a result of the mobile phone incident, as she applied for a restraining order.

Los Angeles police said they attended Depp and Heard's property on May 21 but were asked by the person reporting domestic violence not to take a report.

"Officers' investigation determined that a crime did not occur," Los Angeles police officer Aareon Jefferson said.

In the court papers, Heard wrote: "I endured excessive emotional, verbal and physical abuse from Johnny, which has included angry, hostile, humiliating and threatening assaults to me whenever I questioned his authority or disagreed with him.

"Johnny has a long-held and widely acknowledged public and private history of drug and alcohol abuse. He has a short fuse.

"He is often paranoid and his temper is exceptionally scary for me as it has proven many times to be physically dangerous and/or life threatening to me."

Heard claimed Depp's "relationship with reality oscillates depending upon his interaction with alcohol and drugs".

She added: "As Johnny's paranoia, delusions and aggression increased throughout our relationship so has my awareness of his continued substance abuse.

"Because of this, I am extremely afraid of Johnny and for my safety. I am petrified he will return at any moment."

Heard alleged she was attacked by Depp after she celebrated her birthday on April 21 with friends at their penthouse.

She claimed Depp arrived "inebriated and high" and after her friends left, he threw a magnum sized bottle of champagne at a wall and a wine glass at her and the floor, with both items shattering.

"Johnny then grabbed me by the shoulders and pushed me into the bed, blocking the bedroom door," Heard said.

"He then grabbed me by the hair and violently shoved me to the floor.

"Johnny was also screaming and threatening me, taunting me to stand up. After several minutes, Johnny stormed out of the condominium but not before tossing aside and breaking nearly everything in his path."

Heard said she did not see Depp again for another month before he arrived at their property on May 21 "inebriated and high".

After initially having a "peaceful conversation" about his mother's death, she claimed Depp's "demeanour changed dramatically" and he became "extremely angry".

She said: "Johnny then grabbed the cell phone, wound up his arm like a baseball pitcher and threw the cell phone at me striking my cheek and eye with great force."

Heard claimed Depp then charged at her, insisting on seeing her face, before her friend entered the property.

"I live in fear that Johnny will return...unannounced to terrorise me, physically and emotionally," Heard said.

In an email to Depp's business lawyer, Heard's lawyer Samantha Spector said the alleged attack on May 21 was "not the first incident of domestic violence perpetrated by Johnny against Amber".

"In fact there have been two other incidents in the past six months," Ms Spector said.

"Although Amber is afraid of Johnny, she strongly insists that we do everything possible to keep this personal matter out of the media spotlight."

In a written response to the court, Depp's lawyer Laura Wasser said Heard's request for a temporary restraining order and financial support "appears to be in response to the negative media attention she received earlier this week".

Depp's mother died three days before Heard filed for divorce on Monday.

"Amber is a successful model and actress who earns her own income and is capable of supporting herself," Ms Wasser said.

She added that she understood Depp would be out of the country working in Spain "for the next several weeks and will not return before June 7".

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Carl H Moor granted the temporary restraining order and ruled that Depp should not try to contact Heard.

Heard filed for divorce on Monday, citing irreconcilable differences and saying the pair separated the day before.

The next hearing in the case will take place on June 17.
