A father's fight to stop a knife-wielding carjacker from driving off with his son, was caught on camera.

Tahir Mehmood, 35, had popped into Aldi and was returning with a bunch of flowers when he saw his wife and five-year-old child outside his car and the carjacker in the driver's seat.

But his youngest son, aged three, was still in the back seat.

Mr Mehmood dashed to the car and dived in the front passenger seat.

The car thief pulled out a knife and threatened to stab him, trying to reverse the vehicle as he grappled with Mr Mehmood.

But he bumped into another car behind them and then ran off.

Police have now issued the CCTV footage of the incident at around 7.40pm on Monday April 16 at the Aldi car park in Gorton, Manchester.

Detective Sergeant Shagufta Khan of Greater Manchester Police, said: "Fortunately, the family escaped the ordeal without injury and have been extremely courageous by helping us with the investigation.

"This terrifying sequence of events only lasted for a few moments but the psychological implications this could have on the whole family could stay with them for a considerable time.

"I am urging anybody who witnessed the incident to come forward with any information.

"There were a lot of vehicles and people in the area at the time so the chances are that somebody has seen something to help us with the investigation."

Anyone with information should contact police on 101 and quote incident number 2114 of 16/05/16 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
