Probe resumes into death of woman killed in collision with car chased by police

Inquiries are continuing after a nurse was struck and killed by a car being pursued by a police vehicle in Edinburgh.

Jill Pirrie, 33, was making her way home from work at the city's Royal Infirmary on Thursday evening when she was hit by a Ford Ka that had failed to stop for officers.

Three people were detained on Friday and Police Scotland say they are not looking to trace anyone else in connection with the incident on Old Dalkeith Road.

Relatives and colleagues have paid tribute to the mother of one, who was treated at the scene but later died at the hospital where she worked.

The Police Investigations and Review Commissioner (Pirc) is reviewing the circumstances that led to Ms Pirrie's death.

Her family said in a statement: "Jill was a loving mother, daughter, partner and friend who will be hugely missed by the many who knew and loved her.

"She was well known for her great sense of humour, and no words can express the void that is left as a result of this tragedy."

Jim Crombie from NHS Lothian acute services said: "We are deeply saddened and shocked by this truly tragic incident and our thoughts and sympathies are with Jill's family at this sad time.

"Jill was a talented, well-liked and respected member of our theatres team and her colleagues and friends are devastated. The Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh is a close-knit community and this has sent shock waves through the site."

Chief Superintendent Kenny Macdonald said: "Pirc are instructed to investigate deaths following police contact or involvement, and we will co-operate fully with their inquiry.

"Our sincere condolences are with Jill's family and friends at this tragic time, and we will utilise all resources at our disposal to investigate this collision."
